It’s interesting as to how unaware some people are of their own racism and supremacism, and will just babble on like it is totally normal. It’s not up to arrogant people from North America or Europe to decide how Egypt should deal with its antiquities. To bring in the analogy of the slave trade was grotesque.

Slavery was practiced in Egypt, was it not?

Sure, like most pre-industrial societies. The point I was trying to make was she shifted the conversation to supremacist talking point that some Arabs and local tribal chiefs were involved in the Tran-Atlantic slave trade. This is true but misses the fact that the slave trade was initiated and organized by Western Europeans who were the main beneficiaries. It seems she is arguing that in some cases it’s a good thing that Europeans exploit other parts of the world. It was just a short clip and I don’t know the full story here.

You’re welcome to listen to the full podcast! I don’t clip my shows. Also, the slave trade began to exist the moment slavery began to exist, so the Europeans were far from the only guilty party.

I know, slavery has existed in every civilization for the last 5,000 years. The point is that the brutal trans-Atlantic slave trade that went from the 16th to 19th centuries was lead and organized by capitalists from Europe and North America. Some Arabs and African tribal leaders collaborated, but they were not the principal movers. Some people in ‘western’ countries have tried to use this to absolve their ancestors from the horrors inflicted on the unfortunate people in Africa who were caught up in this inhuman practice.

I don't know enough about the Trans-Atlantic slave trade, so I will have to find out more about it.

The trans-Atlantic slave trade was impossible without longstanding interest and involvement from African states.
